Black Salty Breaking News
| Team Riverside Marine |
Team Riverside Marine/Evinrude, captained by Kaye Donham of Haskell, AR along with her husband, David, and team member Jerry Davis of Magnet Cove, AR captured the coveted "2008 National Lady Angler of the Year", 3rd Place in "2008 National Top Twenty-five Select Championship Tournament", 1st Place in "2008 National Open Striper Fest Tournament", 1st Place in '2008 National Open Striper Fest Tournament Within A Tournament", 1st Place in "2008 National Striper Fest Big Fish Tournament" and the "2008 National Open Striper Fest Tournament Lady Angler of the Tournament" honors of the Striped Bass Conservation Coalition Professional Gold Cup Series Tournament Trail. The SBCC National Tournament was held on Lake Hartwell, which is split by the Georgia and South Carolina borders.
Captain Donham says, "What a year! You cannot have the year, in fact the last three years that we have had without the help of a lot of people. First and above all is our Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, for without him we would not have had the success we had for the past three seasons. The Lord above is this team's strength and guiding light. We also want to thank Tom Booth of Riverside Marine for keeping our motor running, Evinrude Outboard Motors for the best motor in the world, Ford Super Duty Trucks for the greatest truck ever made, I. F. Anderson Farms for the "Black Salty" live baitfish, Lowrance, Shakespeare, Ande Fish Line, Striper Addiction Planer Boards & Umbrellas, Driftmaster Rod Holders, Magnum Boat Trailers, Blue Wave Boats, Pure Fishing Selected Angler Program and Tony Zimmerman of Zimmerman's Sports Center.
"Lake Hartwell was 20 feet low, and you really had to pay attention to what you were doing or you would be in a mess" states Kaye. The team picked-up Bill Linse, a dear friend of theirs from Greenville, South Carolina, to be a member of their team. "Bill knows the lake, and he kept us out of trouble with the lake as low as it was. We were fishing against the nation's top striper fishermen. Bill was a tremendous help," says Donham. "Although the weather was great and the lake was low and we had Bill's help," says Captain Donham, "the lake was also turning over, and that did not help us at all". Even though the team faced many hurdles they survived it all and brought home the hardware and the money.
Captain Donham also notes that even though the Striped Bass Conservation Coalition Professional Gold Cup Series Tournament Trail does not get the big media coverage or number of sponsors that other tournament trails receive, it is still one of the hardest trails to fish due to the select caliber of fishermen and women who like going after the "Big Boys".
"A lot of media people and sponsors are missing the boat if they don't look into this tournament trail," says Kaye. "It's a good trail run by honest folks, and it covers over 12 states, some 35 lakes and 200 communities."
Some of the team's accomplishments in the past three seasons include 2005 American Striper Tournament Trail Austin Carr Memorial Arkansas State Championship Champions, 12th Place in 2005 National Championship, 2006 Central Divisions "Team of the Year", "Lady Angler of the Year", Central Division Champions, 8th Place in 2006 National Championship, 22nd Place in 2006 Open Division Championship, four Gold Cup Tournament Lady Angler of the Tournament awards, 2007 Central Divisions "Team of the Year", "Lady Angler of the Year", 2006 & 2007 Runners-up in the American Striper Tournament Trail Austin Carr Memorial Arkansas State Championship, 2008 Central Divisions "Team of the Year", "Lady Angler of the Year", Central Division Champions, 2008 Texas State Champions, 2008 Oklahoma State Champions.
This is the team's third consecutive year for winning the "Lady Angler of the Year" and "Team of the Year" awards. This is a first on the Professional Gold Cup Series Tournament Trail. The team was also the first team ever to win three Professional Gold Cup Series within the same season (Texoma, Beaver, and Skiatook) and they were consecutive wins, which was a first in SBCC Tournament Trail history.
Most recently, Team Riverside Marine/Evinrude claimed First Place in the Striped Bass Conservation Coalition SBCC Gold Cup Series 2009 Central Division tournament held January 24, 2009 on Lake Quachita, located just west of Hot Springs, AR. The team received a meager three bites that day, but nonetheless turned two of them into catches … one 11.4-pound striper, and another that weighed 14.7 pounds to capture top honors. Both of the fish were taken on live Black Salty baitfish fished 18 to 24 feet deep.
"The Black Salty, and the action it creates, was the trick to our success," Captain Donham reports.
